Miss Writer Interviews Beau Boulden

Hi Beau, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions for In Your Ears Website, if we start with a little introduction for anyone that doesn’t know much about you yet…

Hi, I\’m Beau Boulden, I’m a solo artist from Brighton. I have an unrelenting passion for all things creative and I pretend to like Marmite, to make me seem more mature. My debut single was selected as BBC Intro South\’s Track of the Day & featured me as New Music Monday \’Featured Artist\’.

Your single ‘Unfold’ is out today, what’s the single about?

Unfold is a song about the process of trying to accept a feeling you cannot seem to change. Sometimes it seems like the right way to be feeling, but you know, deep down, it will never end up being good for you. You know that it\’s wrong but you have almost lost yourself within your own powerlessness; you have started to unfold.

When did you first get into music?

I grew up in a household where there was always music playing.. whether it was Marvin Gaye or Oasis, I\’ve been surrounded by music since I was young (thanks Mum & Dad!). The first memory I have of really \’connecting\’ to a song was when I was about 8.. it was a tape of Queen\’s \’We Will Rock You\’ that my dad played in the car on the way home from a football game; I was instantly hooked!

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences and why?

Queen were my first musical love & Freddie Mercury remains my musical icon to this day! In terms of influences, I know everyone says it, but I listen to all genres of music. If I had to pick a few, i\’d probably go with Queen, Biffy Clyro, Lonely The Brave, Tupac, Dry The River, Stevie Wonder, Eminem, ACODA, The Beatles, Bon Iver, Led Zeppelin, Oasis & many more…! I think having a varied musical taste really helps with my writing & creating my sound.

What does it feel like when you play live to a crowd?

Playing live is always a highlight – there\’s nothing like the energy from a crowd & seeing the connection I\’ve made with people through my music, really is an incredible feeling. I think, during a time that is dominated by phones & social media, playing live is probably one of the only moments in everyday life where you can truly be \’in the moment\’. I know it sounds cliche, but when you\’re there on stage, there is nothing else, just you, your music and the crowd. It\’s such a raw feeling that I just try to savour as much as I can!

For anyone that hasn’t heard your music before, how would you describe your sound?

In terms of my sound, I never really like to \’pigeon-hole\’ music, just as my approach to creating and writing is never contrived – I just go with what feels natural! I\’m really enjoying working with synths and oscillators and the space they create, whilst rooting the production around my guitar work. For a FFO, I guess I would go with Post Malone & Lauv.

Do you have any plans to gig/tour when restrictions are lifted?

I\’m in the process of booking some shows & I\’m so excited to play live again! Keep your eyes peeled on my socials for upcoming show announcements..

Which three other under the radar artists/bands would you pick to do a gig with and why?

There are so many great upcoming artists at the moment but, if I had the chance to, I\’d love to play live with Holly Humberstone & Aaron Smith. Both of their vocals are stunning & they have all the tunes too!

You have a fair few covers on your Instagram page, if you could pick anyone to cover one of your tracks, who would you pick and why?

If I could pick anyone to cover one of my tracks, I think I\’d like to hear an artist from a completely different genre.. Maybe Professor Green.. or City & Colour – that would be pretty cool!

Thanks again Beau and good luck with the single!
