Middle of the Road EP By Dictator Review

Dictator have released their latest EP, Middle of the Road, which is a compact 4-track blend of genres that packs a punch in a short span of 12 minutes. Despite its short duration, it still allows the Scottish alternative pop outfit to demonstrate and exhibit their innovative sound through their use of exciting delivery and instrumentation.

Figure it Out, the opening track, begins with a chugging drum beat layered over an 8-bit style synth pattern. As the song progresses, more instrumentation is brought in, including bass and a trumpet which richens the sound. The vocals give off a poetic style that emphasises the story telling and gets the listener lost in the song.

1’z n 0’z incorporates a hefty mix of indie, garage rock and hip hop which creates a truly unique sound guaranteed to get heads bopping with its whirring synths, secured drums and with rap sections, giving the track an extra flavour,  guiding the listener through the EP at a steady pace.

HL7 takes the EP past its half way mark and continues the style fusion that the EP is superbly presenting. This track has a slight heavy edge to its predecessors which amps up the power, keeps the listener on their toes and revs up the pace as the EP starts to come to its close.

El Niño is the final track on the EP which brings down the energy with a more firm pace without losing its prominent sound which has been encompassed throughout the EP, helping the EP to be fully rounded and finishing it off in style, with its interesting instruments continuing to be showcased.

As a whole, the EP has a heavy focus on presenting their many influences and their ability to perform several styles with a major dosage of rhythmical storytelling.
