Elsewhere, Always
I’ve been hooked into the new Overpass album, Elsewhere, Always, since it dropped in June, and I honestly can’t get enough of it. If you’ve been following these guys from Birmingham for a bit, you already knew they had massive anthems in them, but this whole record just completely delivers on that promise. It feels like the definitive soundtrack for the summer.
The two standouts for me are exactly what make this band so great right now. “Is This Real?” is an absolute monster of a tune. The second that guitar riff kicks in, it just hits you in the chest—it’s got this massive, driving energy that makes you want to immediately scream the lyrics back at them. It’s easily one of the best indie-rock tracks to come out this year.
Then you’ve got “I Will,” which hits a completely different but equally perfect vibe. It feels a bit more personal and soaring, building up into this huge, emotional crescendo that honestly gives me goosebumps. Max’s vocals on that track are incredible; you can just feel the grit and emotion behind every word.
The whole album is just incredibly cohesive. There’s no filler—even the transitions between the bigger singles and the deeper cuts feel earned. For a debut record, the confidence on display here is insane. They aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel, but they are playing indie-rock with so much heart, energy, and razor-sharp songwriting that it’s impossible not to love.
If you haven’t blared this one in the car with the windows down yet, you’re missing out.
My personal top tier: Is This Real?, I Will, Union Station, Heaven
