Issy Sutcliffe Interview

Issy Sutcliffe Interview

The most dangerous girl in Manchester!

Hi Issy, thanks so much for taking the time to answer these questions.

I took the heading from a clip I saw on your Instagram and after hearing the tunes and seeing the clips I’m pretty much convinced. For those people who have yet to discover you what can they expect?

Expect unapologetic lyrics, loud guitar and lots of tiny mini skirts.

Your current song Feral is brilliant with a snarling swagger and fierce lyrics. Can you tell us about it. Where did the idea come from?

I wrote it about myself. I have adhd I’m very fast, energetic and live in the moment kind of girl. Much like an animal. The actual title came from when I up in the middle of the night and I saw myself in the mirror and I looked like a feral hamster…

How old were you when you discovered music. Can you remember the first songs that made you think ‘I’m doing this for a living’?

I listened to Avril Lavigne skater boy when I was a kid just was like I wanna be like her. I was very inspired that she wrote her own songs it seemed more interesting than the other popstars at the time.

How does the writing process work for you. Is it lyrics or music first? Where do you find your lyrics?

I usually think of an idea or a mood or a title then I base everything off there. The guitar is usually the last thing I write. My voice is probably my favourite thing to write I was born to just sing free style in my room all the time.

The Cramps would appear to be an influence on Feral. I’m old enough to have been around when they were in their prime, but its something of a very welcome surprise to find them being an influence nowadays. I’m curious to know how they found their way to you?

I used to steal my dad iPod when I was a kid and I remember listening to their song “Human  Fly” just cause it was so weird. Then I listened to the rest of their stuff and just thought it was insane. I’m a freak, they’re freaks, we’re all freaks.

Who are your other musical influences. Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with past or present?

I would like to collaborate with little simz, I think me and her would really connect on a personal level. I also think the combination of guitar music and rap/hiphop is incredible I just can NOT rap haha.

Is it all about the writing or is it about performing live for you? Do you have a favourite live moment yet?

I’m literally addicted to performing, I think it’s the only time I’m not annoying people. My favourite live moment is a gig where there was kids and a little girl was playing a pretend electric guitar to my music. I loved it! We ain’t the rockstars girlfriend no more, we are the rockstar.

Your insta is one of the most entertaining that I follow. Do you find social media a chore or is it something that you enjoy. Do you feel pressure to add content to get yourself ‘out there’?

Absolutely not! I love social media, I don’t have a tv or laptop so I don’t have much else to do haha. And I don’t feel pressure to post more, I feel pressure over the fact I can’t afford expensive videos like other people and I’m a terrible editor. But my friend is helping me film something for my next single which I’m very very very excited for!

Is there anyone in the grassroots scene that you think we should be looking out for?

I’m massive fans of the bands aerial salad and hungry. I just wish I was a talented at music as they are. They’re incredible. We also record with the same guy so I’m a fan of everything he does. (Vibe studios)

Is there an ultimate goal for you? Festival headliner? Number one album? Global takeover?

I want to make every one who’s ever done me wrong fall over and cry because I’m that sexy and talented… just kidding… I’m just focusing on making music a sustainable hobby and trying to reach as many heart/souls as I can. I hope that people will listen to my music no matter how small and just feel incredible.

Moving onto the most important questions:

Are you on a crusade to make leopard print the national dress?

Hmmm… more zebra print.

As someone who appears fearless, is there anything that scares you?

Anything bad happening to my parents. They are so sweet and loving they deserve the entire world.

Stranded on a desert island, you can have 3 records to listen to. What do you pick?

Blondie- a girl should know better

Public enemy- Harder then you think

Big Mama Thornton- Hound Dog

Finally, what else have you got planned for 2024 and beyond? I know people can catch you at Liverpool Sound City on 5th May. Are there any more gigs coming up. Can we expect some more music anytime soon?

I’m in talks with promoters, but I haven’t got anything planned yet. I’m just working on promoting the music that is being released and getting proper guitarist.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions Issy. Good luck for Sound City, I know you will be awesome.
