Interview with Ellur

Ellur is a 22-year-old Northern indie-pop artist from Halifax. Her brilliant new tune “Satellites” is out now and has already been played on Radio One! In Your Ears Music sent Ellur over some questions, check out the answers below

First off you’re from Halifax, a place that has so many wonderful places close by like Hebden Bridge. Is there anywhere you like to go when you write your music?
I tend to write from the comfort of my bedroom. Writing, for me, requires a really safe and intimate environment. For me that’s my room. It’s somewhere I can look inwardly without judging myself, which is something I find really important when it comes to writing.

The music you write is about the challenges and thrills of modern day romance and break-ups with compelling originality. Can you explain why?
It’s (unfortunately) something I know a lot about and I choose to write about it because I think it’s something we can all relate to. Heartbreak is a fact of life but having music and art to turn to during times of need is a really special thing. I’m very grateful and very lucky I get to do what I do.

You started writing your first songs at just 11 years old, what do you enjoy about creating music and do you think you have changed your style as you grew?
My writing style has definitely changed since then. I used to write about romance and break ups then too (except I’d never experienced it). I think I’ve always been a bit of a romantic. Writing music is like a secret place I get to go to and learn about the innermost parts of myself. I love recording and performing but writing is the thing that makes me feel the most alive.

You have supported some incredible female artists recently like Brooke Coombe and Rianne Downey, How was that? Who would be the one artist you would love to support?
BILLIE. EILISH. Dream support slot. She’s the future of music.

You have an upcoming headline UK tour in May 2024, can you tell us more about that?
It’s a three date tour, playing London, Manchester and Leeds. Having just come off two tours in November, the band and I are unbelievably pumped for this. It’ll be lots of dancing and extravagant outfits (likely including my favourite stage shoes, my red wellies). Get yourself a ticket and get your tutu out of the wardrobe and I’ll see you there.

What would be your dream venue to play at?
I mean Wembley Stadium or Madison Square Garden would be gorgeous. Alexandra Palace is also up there. And the Royal Albert Hall in Manchester.

Your latest track Satellites is a brilliant song about the disintegration of relationships you have witnessed from a young age, Can you tell us more about the track?
It’s probably the saddest song I’ve released to date (but I secretly think the saddest songs are the best ones). I wrote it with a brilliant writer named Dan Bryer. When I entered his studio back in summer I told him I wanted to write a song that felt timeless. One that I could still sing in my sixties and it still hold a lot of truth. One of my favourite songs is Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell and it was the main reference track when writing and recording the song. The orchestral performance she did in 2000 is my favourite live performance of all time. What a woman.

What interests or hobbies do you have outside of music?
I’m obsessed with knitting and crochet. I make all sorts of stuff for the band to wear too. I also enjoy going on walks with my dog and finding flowers and foliage to decorate my room with.

There are some amazing artists out there for be discovered, over the last 6 months who have you enjoyed?
On repeat I’ve been listening to Dora Jar, Radiohead, Paolo Nutini, Sharon Van Etten, Slowdive and The Sundays. In terms of new discoveries, Rachel Chinouriri, Sarah Kinsley and SOMOH. Thank you for taking time out to answer our questions. Below are links to Ellur’s Music and upcoming shows!
