Birdman Cult What You Know About Me Review

One of the highlights of this time of year is the annual roundup of 12 months of music. Charts, recommendations, playlists… it all adds up to an intense period of listening and relistening, hoping you haven’t missed anything but usually still finding something new to explore.

For me though the standout is always the AnalogueTrash Label Sampler, which this year has reached volume 8. A run through of this 27 track collection showcases the truly eclectic nature of the label, with the very last song this year providing a sonic slab of guitars and attitude in the form of Birdman Cult with ‘What You Know About Me’.

The Bristol based 5 piece released their eponymous debut album on September 20 th this year, and it had an instant impact on yours truly. What’s not to love about thoughtful lyrics coupled with the kind of riffs that pick you up and throw you around the room?

Clocking in at a compact 2:29, What You Know About Me is a fast and biting take on the class war, the working classes here taking the fight to the man, but with everything ultimately remaining the same, where we are left in a place “where we drink to forget/ and sick up regrets”.

If this song is your introduction to Birdman Cult make sure to follow it through and give the aforementioned album a spin. It’s definitely been a personal highlight in what has been a great year for new music. As for their label Analogue Trash, I’ve gone on record before extolling their virtues, so head to Bandcamp to have a listen to the full sampler and maybe you’ll find a nice end of the year surprise or two for you to explore.
